A Checklist For Buying A Straight Stair Lift
Buying a straight stair lift is usually the most inexpensive
way to go for buying a used or new lift. The straight run of track cost
much less and is easier to install when compared to curved lifts. This
check list will hopefully help you when deciding on your stair lift
choice.
- Are you positive that your stairway is straight?
- Is weight a consideration?
- Is your stairway wide enough?
- How close to an AC outlet or receptacle are your landings?
There is sometimes confusion on this issue. Unless you want two lifts
your staircase must be a straight run. No landings in between floors.
If this is the case then you need to consider a curved stair lift.
There are two maximum weights that stairlifts can be commonly found to
handle. The first is 300 lbs or less (some makes are in the upper
200’s). The second is 500 lbs or less. Will you be carrying boxes,
laundry, or other items along with you? You might want to consider this
as well.
You need to make sure that the stairs are wide enough for the track and
for normal traffic. Some manufacturers use a track that lays flat and
will attach directly to the steps. If they are less than 37 inches wide
then this may be a concern. There are several manufacturers out there
and a consultation with one or two may determine how big of an issue
this might be.
Whether the lift you choose is totally AC dependant or runs on battery
both need a power source. Most stair lifts will come with long power
cord. Just make sure that there is an outlet within a reasonable
distance.
Buying a straight stair lift for your home is relatively easy.
Just be sure to keep this checklist in mind so that your choice will be
the best match for your needs.
